Technology has revolutionized our world in the past 20 years, with the rise of cellular phones, the Internet, and later, social media. While the leaps and bounds have led to amazing advances that have improved the quality of life for millions or even billions of people, there are significant drawbacks to adopting new technology to an extreme degree.

The stereotypes of teenagers constantly texting their friends and overworked men and women who can’t escape their emails are stereotypes for a reason – huge numbers of us are constantly glued to our technology devices. Are you suffering from any of these negative effects of technology?

1. Bad sleeping habits. One of the most noticeable things technology has done is disturb our sleeping habits. We stay up late, mesmerized by the screens and the personalities on the other sides of them. It’s easy to stay awake when there’s just one more text to send, just one more link to click, just one more funny video to find. The end result is bad sleep made even worse by the ways these screens alter our brain’s production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, in an unhelpful way.

    Technology separates families. People may be together physically while each person is emotionally far away chatting with another person.
