It’s no surprise that popular fruits like bananas and apples are a mainstay in the American diet, offering a naturally sweet, nutrient-packed, and convenient way to support overall health. Whether blended into smoothies, tossed into salads, or enjoyed as an on-the-go snack, fruit remains one of the most accessible and versatile staples in the kitchen.
According to 2022 market data from Statista, fresh fruit made up nearly 45% of total produce sales in the U.S.—a figure that reflects a steady rise in demand over the last decade. But with so many nutritious and delicious options available, which fruits are truly America’s favorites?
To find out, we analyzed national purchasing trends and consumer surveys, and spoke with two nutrition experts: Beth Czerwony, MS, RD, CSOWM, LD, a registered dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic Center for Human Nutrition, and Devin Brittain, RD, LDN, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian nutritionist at LCMC Health in New Orleans. They shared why these top fruits continue to lead the pack, how to enjoy them in healthy ways, and three often-overlooked picks worth adding to your fruit bowl.
America’s favorite fruits
To determine the most popular fruits in the United States, we reviewed recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Statista, The Packer’s Fresh Trends report, and the International Fresh Produce Association. These rankings are based on how often each fruit is purchased and consumed by U.S. households throughout the year.
Flavor, nutrition, and year-round availability all influence a fruit’s popularity. According to our experts, the top five fruits have earned their status not just because they taste great, but because they also offer standout health benefits. Ahead, we count down the favorites and explore what makes each one a smart produce pick.
5. Watermelon
With its juicy crunch and hydrating benefits, watermelon is a classic summer favorite—and it’s also one of the most popular fruits in the U.S. One recent study even found that 3 million new American households purchased the fruit in 2024.
“Just like in its name, watermelon is 92% water and helps you stay hydrated,” says Czerwony. It’s also packed with lycopene, “an antioxidant linked to reduced cancer risk and heart health,” according to Brittain.
In addition to being low in calories, watermelon is a good source of vitamin A, which supports healthy skin and vision, and vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and helps the body absorb iron.
Healthy ways to enjoy watermelon: Eat it freshly sliced or cubed, blend it into a hydrating smoothie, freeze into no-sugar-added frozen pops, or serve cubed watermelon with feta cheese and a drizzle of balsamic glaze for a refreshing appetizer at your next summer party.
4. Grapes
One of the most popular fruits in the U.S., grapes are a sweet, hydrating option that comes in red, green, and black varieties. Typically in peak season from late summer to early fall, grapes are available year-round in most grocery stores, making them a convenient staple for snacking and meal prep.
“Grapes are high in vitamins K and C,” says Brittain. Vitamin K supports bone strength and blood clotting, while vitamin C enhances the body’s immune defense and protects cells from oxidative stress. These fruits are also rich in potassium and fiber, which help regulate blood pressure, support digestive health, and promote hydration.
Healthy ways to enjoy grapes: Snack on them fresh with the skin on for added antioxidants, freeze for a low-calorie treat, or toss into a summer salad with grilled chicken and a light vinaigrette.
3. Apples
Crisp, portable, and loaded with health perks, apples remain a favorite fruit in America. Available year-round, they’re at their peak in the fall, with harvest season typically running from late August through November.
“Apples have both soluble and insoluble fiber, which helps lower LDL cholesterol and improve digestion,” explains Czerwony. “The fiber in apples—especially when you keep the skin on—also helps regulate blood sugar and can aid in weight management.”
Healthy ways to enjoy apples: Eat them whole with the skin on for maximum fiber, slice and pair with peanut or almond butter for a balanced snack, or add chopped apples to oatmeal and salads for a naturally sweet crunch.
2. Strawberries
With their bright red color, sweet flavor, and impressive nutrient profile, strawberries are a standout in the lineup of popular fruits. They’re especially abundant during late spring and early summer.
“Strawberries are a good source of antioxidants that help the body against cell damage,” says Czerwony, “which lowers inflammation in the body and could potentially reduce the risk of chronic disease like heart disease and some cancers.” Both Czerwony and Brittain note that strawberries are high in fiber and low in calories, making them ideal for weight management.
Healthy ways to enjoy strawberries: Enjoy them fresh without added sugar, stir into plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese for a high-protein, anti-inflammatory snack, or slice over salads for extra color and nutrition.
1. Bananas
Taking the top spot on the list of popular fruits in America is the ever-reliable banana. Naturally sweet, affordable, and easy to find year-round, bananas are a favorite for good reason. In fact, The Packer’s Fresh Trends 2024 report found that 31.7% of consumers increased their banana purchases in response to inflation, further cementing their status as a budget-friendly favorite.
“Bananas are a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, and vitamin C,” says Czerwony. These nutrients support heart health, digestion, brain function, and immunity. Brittain adds that bananas are also rich in natural sugars, which provide quick energy, making them a perfect pre-workout snack.
Healthy ways to enjoy bananas: Eat them fresh for an on-the-go snack, slice onto oatmeal or whole-grain toast with nut butter, or blend into a yogurt smoothie for a midday energy boost.
Fruits that are often overlooked
While popular fruits like grapes and strawberries dominate grocery carts, there are several underrated fruits that offer unique flavors and impressive health benefits. If you’re looking to branch out, here are a few expert-recommended fruits that deserve a spot in your diet:
1. Dragon fruit
Dragon fruit gets its name from the “dragon-like” scales on its skin, shares Czerwony. With a flavor that’s often described as a mix between pear and kiwi, it’s a great source of fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants that help fight inflammation and support gut health.
Try it: Mix dragon fruit with other tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple to create a fresh fruit salsa.
2. Persimmons
Both Czerwony and Brittain share that persimmons is a fruit you need to try. Its naturally sweet flavor, with hints of honey and cinnamon, makes it a satisfying option for those with a sweet tooth. Persimmons are rich in vitamin A and C and high in dietary fiber and antioxidants to support a healthy immune system.
Try it: Add sliced persimmons to your next charcuterie board.
3. Lychee
Described as a blend of strawberry, watermelon, pear, and rose water, lychee has the juicy texture of grapes and a delicate floral sweetness. It’s a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, which can aid in wound healing and help reduce skin damage. “It is very important to eat ripened lychee and not on an empty stomach,” cautions Czerwony. Unripened lychee can cause vomiting, seizures, low blood sugar, and low blood pressure.
Try it: Add lychee to a mixed fruit salad for an interesting twist.
