Amazon Has a New Prescription Plan—Here’s How You Can Use It

Updated: Feb. 21, 2023

RxPass, the new Amazon prescription plan, includes more than 80 medications. Here's what you need to know.

Amazon is already involved with almost every facet of our lives—from television to grocery shopping to products that make us happier—so it only makes sense that the company would expand more deeply in healthcare.

Recently, Amazon announced the creation of its new prescription plan that offers some steep discounts that might make it an attractive alternative to visiting your local pharmacy.

What Is Amazon’s New Prescription Plan?

RxPass, the new Amazon prescription plan, is a $5 monthly unlimited delivery pass on 80 common generic prescription drugs treating allergies, inflammation, high blood pressure and other conditions. It’s rolled out in most states (California, Texas and Minnesota being exceptions) and is available to customers who are not currently enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid or another government program.

The $5-a-month delivery plan is available exclusively to Amazon Prime members, regardless of insurance status. The benefit offers savings and discounts on prescriptions at over 60,000 pharmacies including Amazon Pharmacy, which was launched a few years ago. With RxPass, Prime members can receive all of their eligible medications for one flat, low monthly fee of $5, delivered free of charge. There are no hidden fees and no markups.

The new Amazon prescription plan offers generic medications to treat over 80 common health conditions, including high blood pressure, hair loss, anxiety and acid reflux. Among the generic drugs included in the program include bupropion, estradiol, cephalexin and doxycycline.

“Any customer who pays more than $10 a month for their eligible medications will see their prescription costs drop by 50% or more, plus they save time by skipping a trip to the pharmacy,” said John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy. “We are excited to offer our customers surprisingly simple, low pricing on the eligible medications they need each month.”

Who Should Enroll in the Plan?

Prime members who typically take two or more medications per month to manage ongoing health conditions could save significant time and money with RxPass.

You can also get prescription discounts of up to 80% off generic and up to 40% off brand-name medications at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide with the Amazon Prime prescription savings benefit—included with your Prime membership at no additional cost. Note that is not insurance and cannot be combined with insurance, and you are responsible for the cost of prescriptions when using the card.

How Do I Sign Up for RxPass?

First, make sure you are signed into your Amazon Prime account. You won’t be able to take advantage of RxPass without Amazon Prime, so be sure to sign up for that first if you haven’t already done so.

Then, sign up for Amazon Pharmacy. You’ll be prompted to answer a series of questions such as your prescriber’s information and allergy information. Once you’re done filling out these questions, you’ll be able to check the prices of your medications if they’re available. If your medication is available through RxPass, there will be a little “Included with RxPass” signifier on the listing.

Amazon will contact your doctor for the prescription (though you can also provide it yourself if you have it). Then, you can simply place your order.
