The FDA warns that a labeling error, affecting customers in eight states, could "represent a serious or life-threatening health risk."
A Seasonal Bakery Item’s Been Recalled at a Regional Retailer
Holiday food shopping is in full swing—with Hanukkah occurring now and Christmas just a little over a week away, snagging some baked goods for a family brunch or buffet is an easy way to check something quick off the list. But if you recently bought some at one specific retail chain, you may want to take a peek for some unexpected—and possibly hazardous—toppings.
On December 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a recall announcement pertaining to a single lot of Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake. The recall, voluntarily conducted by The James Skinner LLC, is due to incorrect labeling. According to the recall notice, the coffee cake was packaged in cases that included Maple Walnut Coffee Cake labels but was then “inadvertently individually labeled” as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake. A similar notice is also available on the Publix website.
The mix-up was reportedly first discovered by a store employee who noticed the visible walnuts on top of the coffee cake labeled as Raspberry Coffee Cake. The Raspberry Coffee Cake includes a label that declares the product was “processed on equipment that also processes almonds, pecans, and walnuts”—but notably does not include walnuts in the ingredient list. Walnuts are visible through the clear lid packaging as an ingredient on top of the Maple Walnut Coffee Cake, while the Raspberry Coffee Cake does not include walnuts and instead has a red topping.
The mislabeled coffee cakes were distributed to Publix stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The recall affects just certain products in one day’s production and has since been corrected, according to the recall notice.
Aside from the visible presence of walnuts, the FDA provided the following information to identify if the coffee cake you purchased is labeled incorrectly, as well as product photos to help with identification:
Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake individually labeled as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake
- Size: 14 ounces
- Lot code: 5309
- SKU: 54591
- Date of manufacture: 11/5/2025
No illnesses have been reported to date, but customers who purchased the recalled coffee cake are urged to return it to their store of purchase for a full refund. The company is also urging consumers who have a walnut allergy not to consume the product, as it could pose a “serious or life-threatening health risk to people with a walnut allergy.”
