As we head into the holidays, nuts add not just a comforting aroma that instantly evokes the season, but also a nibble of nutrition to pies, cookies, and sweet breads.

Yet before you prepare your next recipe, a notice just issued by the bulk retailer Costco says that American Nuts, LLC has initiated a voluntary recall of its Dry Roasted Baking Macadamia Nuts, sold in 20-ounce packages.

According to one December 5 alert issued to Costo customers, the affected product has been flagged due to possible contamination with Salmonella, a bacteria leading to foodborne illness. Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting—and can be especially dangerous for young children, seniors, pregnant women, or individuals with weakened immune systems.

Originally announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 13, 2025, the ongoing recall has now been assigned a Class I risk level. This indicates that consuming the nuts could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” according to the FDA’s recall definitions. The USDA notes that Salmonella is responsible each year for 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths across the nation

The Costco notice indicates that they were sold between November 29, 2025 and December 4, 2025 at the Hawaii Kai warehouse, a Costco branch located in Honolulu. The contaminated products do not appear to affect mainland stores, though the recall notice does not explicitly list a full distribution map pertaining to the recalled product.

According to one recall news site, a total of 2,700 units of the nuts were affected. You can spot them using the following information:

  • Labeled as: “Dry Roasted Baking Macadamia Nuts, Unsalted Halves Ideal for Baking, Cooking, Salads or Ice Cream”
  • Net weight: 20 oz. (567g)
  • UPC code: 8 60011 44301 8
  • Item number: 1840464
  • Lot code: 307HMNC25L3

“Please check any units you may have for this lot code,” Costco stated to members. “Do not consume any nuts that may be part of the recall and return the product to your local Costco for a full refund.”

The American Nuts site notes that its quality control is “ensured by cutting edge equipment including color sorters, metal detectors, and X-Ray inspectors”—as well as third party inspection, testing, and certifications. “When you choose American Nuts, you can rest assured that all services and products meet the highest safety standards in the industry,” they write.
