An August recall now stretches to encompass a half-dozen cheese varieties. The maker has halted production, but here are the areas where consumers may have purchased.
A Cheese Recall Was Just Expanded to 3 More States and a Walmart Brand
Ask Americans what’s on their plates and on any given day, nearly 70% will say cheese, USDA research shows. Yet the popularity of this protein- and calcium-rich dairy means recalls can spark widespread concern—especially when popular flavors like cheddar are involved.
Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op, an Amish-run dairy facility located outside of Cleveland, learned this last month when 5,433 pounds of their products were pulled from Ohio shelves over contamination concerns. Now, the FDA advises that recall has expanded across three more states to include three additional products—at least one of which Walmart reported Tuesday may be sold at Sam’s Club locations in multiple states.
The recall was reportedly initiated after internal testing at the co-op revealed possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a type of bacteria which the recall notice states can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” While authorities suggest most healthy adults will experience temporary symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women and other complications among other individuals.
The initial recall notice noted that the products were shipped to distributors, dining halls, manufacturers, and retail outlets in Ohio only. Now the FDA has updated its warning to include Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas.
The affected items, listed below, were reportedly produced on May 30, 2025 and August 13, 2025 and distributed between July 7, 2025 and August 14, 2025:
