A heat wave is expected to hit America this weekend, sending temperatures into the triple digits in some areas. To keep healthy, it’s essential to stay hydrated…but that doesn’t mean you have to only drink water. Why not an ice-cold bottle of Topo Chico?

If you decide to opt for a crisp mineral water, just be sure to check the bottle for its lot code, as thousands of products have been recalled across multiple states.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the ongoing recall of 4,338 bottles of Topo Chico carbonated mineral water is being considered a Class II health risk.

A Class II national risk level is reserved for situations in which “use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” per the FDA website.

The Healthy previously reported on the Topo Chico recall, which was voluntarily initiated by the Coca-Cola Company on May 28. The Coca-Cola company owns the Topo Chico brand, as well the water brands Smartwater and Dasani—though it’s probably best known for its iconic Coca-Cola and Diet Coke soft drinks.

The FDA report lists the reason for the recall as “Pseudomonas in Mineral Water.” It further states, “The firm was notified by their distributor that product placed on hold was released and shipped to customers.”

Pseudomonas are a bacteria commonly found in water, soil, and produce, says the Cleveland Clinic. It can potentially lead to ear, eye, lung, skin, and blood infections, though it typically doesn’t affect people with healthy immune systems.

The FDA report indicates that the recalled items were distributed to five states: Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas.

It also shares the following:

  • Product: Topo Chico Mineral Water Carbonated 16.9 FL OZ (500mL) bottle
  • Product quantity: 241cases with 18 16.9 oz (500mL) bottles per case
  • UPC: 0 21136 18061 9
  • Case UPC: 0 21136 18062 6
  • Lot #11 A 2543, Lot #12 A 2543, & Lot #13 A 2541
  • Made in Mexico

According to a recall notice distributed to Costco members, the product’s lot code can be located on the case and on the neck of each bottle.
