For certain consumers, this can be a risky error—and the issue appears to follow a recent similar incident.
No. 1 Cracker Brand Recalls Popular Product for a Hazardous Label Error, Major Grocery Chain Announces
After a busy holiday week of cooking from scratch, filling your pantry with some fuss-free snacks can offer a much-needed break from the kitchen. But a breaking recall announcement from a cracker brand that’s found in nearly half of all U.S. households, according to Market Dive, is prompting shoppers to take a closer look at what’s in their snack cabinets.
On November 30, Mondelez Global LLC, the parent company of Ritz Crackers, issued a recall for select boxes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches sold in 20-pack cartons. The products were confirmed to have been sold at Wegmans, and may have been distributed at other grocery retailers.
The Wegmans announcement states: The affected cartons include individually wrapped packs that may be incorrectly labeled as Cheese variety even though the product may be a Peanut Butter variety.
For some consumers, this discovery might be a simple nuisance—but for individuals with peanut allergy who could unknowingly ingest peanut-containing products, the error could cause significant health risks.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, peanut allergy is “the most common food-related cause of anaphylaxis, which can lead to swelling in your airways or a severe drop in blood pressure.” Other symptoms can also occur.
Those who may have peanut allergies should take precautions to avoid products marked with the following information, provided in the Wegmans announcement:
- Product Name: Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich — 20 Pack
- UPC: 0 44000 07584 2
- Best By Dates: 8 JAN 26 and 15 JAN 26
- Plant Code: AE only
This mislabeling issue echoes a previous event in July, 2025, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of four Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich carton sizes: 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack, as well as the 20-pack Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack. In both cases, the products were said to contain cheese but actually contained peanut butter.
That earlier recall was linked to defects in the film packaging rolls used to wrap individually packaged peanut butter products, caused by a supplier error. At that time, Mondelez reported taking corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The FDA warned: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product.”
For Wegmans part, the company says recalled product can be returned to the store’s service desk for a full refund. For questions or additional information, consumers may contact Mondelez Global LLC at 1-844-366-1171.
