Bagel capital of the world, New York City, recently experienced its own mass cream cheese recall after a Long Island-based producer discovered through routine sampling that the bacteria Listeria was growing on some of their equipment.

Now a separate case has emerged, this time in the Midwest, but affecting a popular bagel shop franchise. A March 28 FDA report has revealed that a Green Bay, Wisconsin-based supplier for Einstein Bros. bagels, which calls itself “the largest fast-casual bagel brand in America,” has recalled 144 cases of cream cheese for undeclared almonds. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Here’s how the federal agency reports on what occurred:

“This voluntary recall was initiated after shipment of product with mismatched lid and cup was discovered. The lid correctly identifies the product as Honey Almond, but the cup incorrectly identifies the product as Plain (containing no almonds). Subsequent investigation indicates there was a limited packaging staging issue that was corrected, and review confirmed the issue was contained to this product only.”

The report states that product was shipped to Einstein Bros. locations in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

Affected product units were reportedly six-ounce plastic cups labeled Einstein Bros. Bagels with a “Honey Almond” lid and a “Plain” cup. “The lot code located on the bottom of the cup is Best If Used By Jul 21, 2026 LO,” notes the report.

Customers are urged to return the product.

While the FDA has not yet assigned a risk level to the event, undeclared food allergy recalls often obtain the highest risk level for seriousness and severity.

Einstein Bros. was founded in Colorado in 1995 and now operates more than 600 stores in approximately 44 U.S. states.
