It's a shelf-stable version of the calcium-rich beverage, but officials say there could be an issue with bacterial contamination.

More Than 92,000 Pounds of Milk Have Been Recalled in 2 States

While there’s nothing like using fresh ingredients in the kitchen, it’s always a good idea to stock up on non-perishable items with a long shelf life—especially ones that offer some nutritional value. After all, you just never know when the power could be knocked out and the food in your fridge will spoil.
Beyond canned beans and bags of rice, you may also want to keep dry milk on hand—it’s perfect as a coffee creamer or for thickening smoothies or mashed potatoes. Just this week, though, officials are warning of an issue involving dry milk from an established dairy.
Though a recall was evidently first initiated on May 19, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently published a report detailing a problem affecting 92,594 pounds of nonfat dry milk from Crystal Creamery Inc. In total, 1,680 bags are affected. The agency has not yet assigned a risk level classification to the event, and it’s not immediately clear why the report just became available this week.
Crystal Creamery Inc., a company based in Modesto, California, is supposedly the state’s “oldest dairy,” according to its website. It’s reportedly recalling the dry milk products due to “potential contamination with Salmonella,” per the FDA.
The Cleveland Clinic explains: “Salmonella, or salmonellosis, is an infection with Salmonella bacteria that causes diarrhea, fever and stomach pains.” In healthy individuals, it often goes away without medical intervention after a few days, but several groups of higher risk individuals could experience more serious effects.
The FDA states that products were distributed to California and Texas.
The report shares the following details:
- Product description: NON FAT DRY MILK. “LOW HEAT SPRAY PROCESS GRADE A NON FAT DRY MILK MADE FROM PASTEURIZED MILK, PRODUCT OF U.S.A.
- Net weight: 25.00 kilograms (kg)
- Lot: 21APR25
- Internal Item Number: 79065
- Product quantity: 92,594 lbs (1,680 bags – 25kg/bag)
The FDA report does not share at which stores may have carried the dry milk product. Crystal Creamery products appear to be sold at some small retailers, but the “Nonfat Dry Milk Lo Heat” product seems to be sold in bulk, as it’s listed as one of the company’s industrial products distributed for “commercial and production needs.”
