The product description calls it "chunky," but one toothsome ingredient could lead to injury of the mouth or G.I. tract.

A Popular Canned Soup Has Been Recalled, a Beloved Supermarket Announces

If you’re a Wegmans fan, you know their store-made meals are one reason they’re so beloved…plus, they keep old-standby brands in stock, too. One of those was recalled according to a report published late this week by the Mid-Atlantic grocery chain.
If the name Dinty Moore stirs up nostalgic memories of daytime TV commercials, you’re not wrong. It’s still in production, and it’s still described in that old-school way—from Walmart’s site: “This preservative-free chunky beef stew is hearty, makes a tasty, homestyle meal to fill up with after a long day and is shelf stable.”
Late Thursday, Wegmans announced a recall on Dinty Moore Beef Stew, sold in 20-ounce containers. The advisory does not include additional details about which states or store locations may be directly affected. It’s also unclear whether this affects Dinty Moore product sold at other grocery outlets, as the brand, owned by Hormel, appears to be sold at Walmart, Target, BJ’s, and other retailers.
The recalled product details are:
- Dinty Moore Beef Stew, 20 ounces (oz.)
- UPC: 000-37600-21583-1
- Batch Number: Best By Feb. 2028 EST 199G T02045
The product “may contain extraneous wood material,” according to the announcement. It’s unclear how the foreign matter might have made it into packaging during production, but wood or wood-like materials have been cited as the reason behind frozen meals and soup recalls in recent months.
If you’ve purchased the product and still have it on hand, Wegmans advises you can return it at a customer service desk for a full refund.
