(Editor’s note: On Wednesday, August 6, a spokesperson for Target emailed The Healthy with the following statement: “At Target, we’re committed to providing high quality and safe products for our guests.  Following the voluntary recall initiated by Give and Go Prepared Food Corps, Target has removed all impacted Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies, 10 count, from stores and online. If guests previously purchased these products, they can call Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 for a full refund.”)

It’s a familiar joke on both social media and among Target shoppers: You go in for one item, you leave with a cart full of goodies. There’s also their infamous deals section, now named Bullseye’s Playground after their adorable dog mascot, that’s always full of new surprises and steals.

If your latest Target excursion included treating yourself to something sweet (very sweet), a new announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be for you.

Tuesday, the agency notified the public concerning a recall of Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies, sold in a 10-count size and distributed by Target Corporation. In total, 12,045 units are reportedly affected, though it’s not immediately clear whether each unit counts as one 10-count container.

Favorite Day is a Target-owned brand, comprising “more than 700 high-quality, carefully crafted items … all at an only-at-Target value,” according to a 2021 press release.

The cookies are being recalled due to the presence of “Foreign Material (wood),” according to the report. In May, the iconic brand Dinty Moore faced a recall of more than 256,000 pounds of stew after consumers discovered wood in the product.

The FDA reports the recalled product was sent to three distribution centers in Connecticut, Maryland, and Ohio. Additionally, retail stores in the following 20 states and Washington, D.C. reportedly received the cookies: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, and Vermont.

A Canadian company, Give and Go Prepared Foods Corp, is named by the FDA as the recalling firm. In 2020, Give & Go (as stylized on its company website) was acquired by Mondelez International, per a press release. Last month, the Mondelez-owned brand of Ritz Crackers faced a recall.

Though the recall first went into effect on July 22, the FDA just categorized it as a Class II event on Monday, August 4. Class II recalls involve products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, though serious health risks or death are not anticipated by the agency.

As of press time, Target had not yet posted information on its corporate recall page about it.
