Listeria monocytogenes, a type of bacteria the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says is capable of both surviving and growing in refrigerated conditions, has been recently linked to more than one widespread food safety issue. Just as a growing cheese recall this week affected products sold in stores like Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Target, another food recall—this time connected to one of the country’s largest food and drug retailers—winds down.

On Tuesday, November 25, the FDA updated details concerning a large-sale recall affecting 13 ready-made pasta meals produced by Albertsons Companies, LLC of Boise, Idaho. These deli items contained ingredients manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, California, which were found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes in late September 2025.

If that name rings a bell, it’s likely because Nate’s Fine Foods was linked to a broader Listeria outbreak that caused at least 27 illnesses in 18 states as of late October. Various pasta types made by that company, including fettucine, linguine, and farfalle (bowtie pasta), tested positive for the bacteria. According to a separate FDA outbreak investigation, Nate’s Fine Foods pasta recalls involved products sold at Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Sprouts, and more.

The recall update regarding Albertsons pasta products, which is listed as “terminated” as of November 25, includes the following products sold at several store chains owned by Albertsons:

The FDA marks an incident as a “terminated recall” once it has “determined that all reasonable efforts have been made to remove or correct the violative product in accordance with the recall strategy, and proper disposition has been made according to the degree of hazard,” the health authority explains.

The end of the Albertson’s recall comes as especially welcome news, given the event’s severity: The FDA had previously listed it as a Class I incident—the highest risk level in a three-tier scale, which suggests the possibility of “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Listeria is most dangerous for infants, seniors, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA writes.

Though most consumers will already have discarded the affected items—their latest “Sell thru” dates were in early October—it’s still a good idea to check labels to ensure the products aren’t sitting in your fridge, contaminating other items. In these situations, the FDA recommends that “anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.”
