Another chocolate product is under scrutiny this week—and health experts warn of the potential for “life-threatening” reactions.

Chocolate Snacks Have Been Recalled in 6 States

Chocolate-covered almonds are a top choice when you’re craving a decadent, guilt-free sweet. Not only are they a healthier option than, say, a slice of a sugary cake, but one study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests, “Incorporating almonds, dark chocolate, and cocoa into a typical American diet without exceeding energy needs may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”
If you keep chocolate-covered almonds on hand when you need a snack, though, you’ll want to hear about a new multi-state recall.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public to the recall of Frederik’s by Meijer Dark Chocolate Almonds. Its report, published on June 16, indicates that the recall was initiated due to “undeclared cashews.”
An announcement from Meijer, a popular retailer in the Midwest, notes that the products may “contain dark chocolate-covered cashews, which are not declared on the label.” It continues, “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.”
While almonds and cashews are both tree nuts, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains, “An allergy to one tree nut does not necessarily mean an individual is allergic to other tree nuts.”
The report does not state the total number of products involved in the recall.
According to the notice, the recalled items were packaged in black stand-up pouches and were sold in Meijer stores in six states: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
The company also provided the following details:
Frederik’s by Meijer Dark Chocolate Almonds (12 oz.)
- UPC: 7-08820-68730-1
- Sell by date: 05/07/2026, 05/28/2026
Frederik’s Dark Chocolate Almonds 8-count 1.5 oz
- UPC: 7-19283-11923-0
- Best by date: 05/05/2026
Meijer reportedly initiated the recall after hearing about the alleged issue by a customer who had purchased the product.
The recall announcement urges consumers with cashew allergies or sensitivities to not eat the product and to instead return it to a Meijer store customer service desk. Consumers can contact the company with questions about the recall at 800-543-3704.
The report advises, “Customers with questions or concerns about their health are encouraged to contact their primary care provider.”
This isn’t the only chocolate product recall this week. Yesterday, The Healthy reported that grocery chain Wegmans has recalled store-brand chocolate nonpareils.
