Frozen foods serve as a reliable shortcut when time’s tight, offering a solution to the question of dinner on busy nights and, in the case of frozen fruits and vegetables, are often picked and frozen right at the peak of freshness. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced a Class I recall—the highest risk level—affecting millions of bags of frozen food sold across the country.

Chetak Foods, LLC issued a voluntary recall for several of its Deep Brand frozen foods due to testing positive for Salmonella, according to the FDA’s enforcement report. The nationwide recall was initiated on July 16, voluntarily expanded on September 9, but the FDA just officially designated it on December 11 as a Class I event. A Class I signifies “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall affects more than 3.5 million bags of frozen food. In a public letter posted on its website, Chetak Foods voluntarily expanded the recall in September to also include food that had not tested positive for Salmonella, but had been run on the same equipment as the contaminated food between December 18, 2024, and August 18, 2025.

Full details, including lot numbers for the affected bags, can be found above at the FDA’s enforcement report. The FDA also includes a list of product images to help with identification.

Twelve people reported illnesses across 11 states in connection with the company’s overall recall, with four of those cases requiring hospitalization. According to an FDA investigation report, four of six cases that had information available “reported eating or likely eating sprouted beans.” Of those four, two cases “reported eating frozen sprouted mat (moth) and moong (mung) beans before becoming ill.” The 12 illnesses were reported in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

A Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, fever, nausea or vomiting, and headache, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Most people can clear the infection on their own in just a few days, but children under 5, older adults, and those who have a compromised immune system can face the risk of more severe infection.

Chetak Foods’ letter notes that “frozen vegetable and fruit products with lot numbers other than those listed are not included in this recall and are safe to consume. For all other frozen vegetables, please cook thoroughly.” Previous FDA notices urged consumers to check their freezers and discard any recalled products with matching lot codes.
