Having frozen vegetables on hand is one smart (and budget-friendly) way to keep mealtime nutritional levels up even as fall and winter roll around, but a newly updated recall reminds us how even prepackaged produce can face contamination concerns. Two frozen veggie products—bags of mixed vegetables and peas and carrots—just earned the FDA’s highest risk warning level in an event spanning six states found in the eastern U.S.: Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, in addition to Washington, D.C.

An update issued from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday, September 19 provides new insight regarding the frozen vegetable recall first announced on September 4. Initially, the agency reported that Mount Vernon, NY-based Endico Potatoes was recalling Endico brand “Peas and Carrots” and “Mixed Vegetables” products sold in frozen 2.5 lb. clear plastic bag packages. The incident has now received a Class I warning level from the FDA, acknowledging potentially severe or life-threatening health outcomes related to the recall.

The recall was initiated when the veggies were found to “have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA’s September 4 notice. The problem was reportedly discovered during a routine inspection at a distributor’s Pennsylvania facility.

As a recent fish recall also revealed, Listeria is a bacteria capable of thriving in cold environments. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety & Inspection Service, “Listeria is persistent and grows in cool temperatures, even as low as 31 degrees F.”

Between the dates of July 18, 2025 and August 4, 2025, the frozen products were reportedly sent to “local distributors” in the states mentioned above. It is not further clarified where consumers may have been able to purchase them.

Listed as both the recalling firm and distributor, Endico Potatoes Inc. states on a company website that it’s “the industry leader in frozen potato, vegetable, chicken and appetizer products.” The company also says it’s a redistributor for several popular brands, such as Tyson, McCain, and Lamb-Weston.

Products’ lot codes are said to be printed on the side of the bag, along with a “Production Date” and a “Use By Date.” Additional details, such as storage and preparation methods, can be find at the FDA’s September 19 update link.

As of the September 4 announcement, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Additionally, the FDA reported at that time that the company had “ceased distribution of the product” while the investigation continued.

Consumers in possession of the affected veggies were urged to not eat them. For those interested in a refund, the FDA encouraged returning the products to the place of purchase.
