When you’re short on time in the morning, it might be tempting to forgo food in the midst of heading to the gym, taking care of kids, or getting to the office on time. Enter: instant oatmeal. Just heat up some water—or milk, if you’re feeling indulgent—and you’re halfway there to a hot, heart-healthy breakfast.

If you often turn to this quick and delicious way to start your day, there is one recent caution to be aware of—you’ll probably want to check your pantry to see if your favorite oatmeal is affected.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted the public to a recall of 1,350 cases of Giant-branded Raisins and Spice Instant Oatmeal. Giant Food is a regional supermarket chain with store locations in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., according to its website.

The report does not state how many boxes each case contained, but it did note the breakfast food was sold with 10 packets per box.

The reason for the recall is listed as: “Undeclared Allergen (walnuts), was not on outer packaging but was on the inner packaging of product.”

Walnuts are a type of tree nut, one of the food allergens that must be declared on food product packaging in the U.S. It’s estimated that 0.5 to 1% of Americans—potentially around 3.4 million people—have a tree nut allergy, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

The FDA report says Vaughan Mills Packaging Ltd., a Canada-based food manufacturer, initiated the recall. The company’s website states that it produces hot cereal, oatmeal, and grits, among other products, and distributes these items to “over 100 North American distribution centers in 34 states & provinces.”

The recalled oatmeal was reportedly distributed to Washington, D.C. and four states: Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The FDA also shared the following details:

  • Brand: Giant
  • Product: Instant Oatmeal Raisins and Spice
  • Packaging: 10 packets (1.5 oz.) per box
  • Net. Weight: 15.01 oz.
  • Code Information: JUN102026, JUN112026, JUL062026, AUG052026, AUG202026, AUG212026, SEP122026, SEP132026, SEP142026

Vaughan Mills Packaging Ltd. apparently initiated the recall, which is ongoing, on April 4. However, the FDA report appears recent and announces the agency’s decision to label the recall as a Class II event, meaning that it has the potential to “cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

Back in April, a leading producer of oats in North America recalled more than 63,000 pounds of product.
