Two popular products sold through a major retailer and containing the same active ingredient as Rogaine are being flagged by a national agency.
2 Hair Growth Products Recalled for Safety Risk to Particular Group
Hair loss can spark self-consciousness, but it’s incredibly common. According to the National Council on Aging, by age 65, about 53% of men and 37% of women will experience some form of hair loss (and some experts say the actual prevalence among mature women is closer to that of men). From nutrition supplements to topical shampoos and holistic products like rosemary oil, products are at peak abundance purporting to slow the rate of loss or regrow some hair. If you purchased any over the past 15 months, note a Thursday report on two recalls.
U.S. consumer advocacy agency the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published recall reports on RootStim Beard Growth Serum, 5% Minoxidil and Ruahouine Hair Growth Serum, both reportedly recalled on January 15 due to violating mandatory standards for child-resistant packaging, “posing a risk of serious injury or death from poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children.”
Both of the products include minoxidil, which is a drug commonly found in over-the-counter hair growth products such as Rogaine. Minoxidil is not approved or safe for children, and products containing this chemical compound must be in child-resistant packaging to comply with the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.
The recall is said to affect 16,900 packages of RootStim Beard Growth Serum and 25,000 bottles of Ruahoine Hair Growth Serum. The CPSC provided the following details to identify the recalled product:
RootStim Beard Growth Serum, 5% Minoxidil
- 2.0 fluid ounces/60 milliliters (ml)
- Bottles are packaged in black boxes with orange and white lettering and have an orange mustache icon on their front panel.
- The bottles are black with a black spray cap, a transparent top cap, and an orange and black wraparound label bearing the same information as the box.
- “Beard Growth Treatment” and “5% Minoxidil – Biotin & Rice Water” are printed on the front
- “Distributed By RootStim LLC” is printed on the bottom
- 2.11 fluid ounces/60 milliliters (ml)
- Bottles are packaged in black boxes, product comes in transparent amber dropper bottles
- Ruahouine,” “Minoxidil Hair Growth Serum,” and “5% Minoxidil With Biotin” are printed on labels wrapped around the bottles and boxes
Both products were sold on Amazon. The RootStim Beard Growth Serum was sold November 2024 through September 2025, and the Ruahouine Hair Growth Serum was sold January 2025 through July 2025.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the way that minoxidil works is not entirely clear, but it stimulates hair growth in men and women with a certain type of baldness. Generally, it has to be used for several months to start seeing hair growth, and the growth only lasts as long as the product is used.
The CPSC says no injuries or illnesses have been reported as of press time.
Both recall notices advise immediately securing the bottles and keeping them out of reach of children. Consumers should contact either RootStim or Ruahouine for directions on properly discarding the product and receiving a refund or replacement bottle.
