When you need to beat the heat during summer, heading to a pool or beach can be just the ticket (while also replenishing your body with electrolytes if you sweat a lot). But for those days when it’s simply too hot to even leave the house, an air conditioner’s cooling blast can make all the difference.

There’s a new warning from one U.S. agency, though, that’s letting consumers know: You might’ve gotten more than just refreshing airflow when using certain air conditioner models.

On Thursday, June 5, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that an estimated 1.7 million U and U+ Window Air Conditioners were being recalled in the U.S., along with an additional 45,900 units in Canada.

The recall reason is stated as: “Pooled water in the air conditioners can fail to drain quickly enough, which can lead to mold growth.” CPSC further explains, “Mold exposure poses risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers.”

The agency notes that there have been at least 152 reports of mold being found in the air conditioners. Of those 152, 17 involved consumers “experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and/or sore throats from mold exposure.”

While GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co. Ltd. of China is listed as the manufacturer of the window-mounted units, they were sold under a variety of well-known brand names, including Comfort Aire, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, and Sea Breeze, among others.

According to the CPSC, the air conditioning units are white in color, about 22 inches wide and 14 inches high, and feature a brand name on its front. A model number is apparently located on a label on the front right side.

Additionally, the units were reportedly sold in three cooling sizes: 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU. Remote controls were included, though they can also be controlled via a mobile app.

The CPSC report shared the following brand names and model numbers for the recalled units:

The recalled air conditioners were reportedly sold across the country at retailers such as Costco, Menards, Home Depot, and Best Buy. They were also sold online at Amazon and many other retail websites—the full list can be found at the above CPSC link.

The products were reportedly sold sometime between March 2020 and May 2025 and cost between $280 and $500.

CPSC says that consumers should contact Midea, the listed importer, to get a free repair on a recalled unit or a full or prorated refund, depending on when the unit was purchased or manufactured.

Anyone who wants a refund will be asked to return the unit to Midea using a free shipping label. Alternately, they can share a photo of the unit with proof that they cut its unplugged power cord.

As for those looking for a repair, CPSC states, “Consumers who want a repair should contact Midea to arrange for a technician to install a new drain plug or send consumers a repair kit that includes a new drain plug and bubble level, depending on the model.”
