You might typically associate Salmonella occurrence with agricultural foods, like eggs or meat—not a dry good, such as nuts.

But before you reach for the American Heart Association‘s recommended one-ounce serving per day of this omega-rich protein, it’s a good idea to check your labels. On December 2, the popular East Coast supermarket chain, Wegmans, announced that two varieties of their Deluxe Mixed Nuts have been recalled due to the “possible presence of Salmonella.”

The products were sold in smaller, 11.5-ounce packages, and in larger, 34-ounce “family packs” bearing the following identifying information:

Wegmans Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts, FAMILY PACK 34 ounces (oz.)

  • UPC: 0-77890-42131-4
  • Best By: JUL 28 2026
  • Lot Number: DC 58041

Wegmans Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts 11.5 ounces (oz.)

  • UPC: 0-77890-42135-2
  • Best By: AUG 10 2026
  • Lot Number: DC 58171

The safety alert notes that the “Best By” date and lot numbers are located in different places, depending on the product. On the family pack, you can find that information “below the lid on the side of the tub.” On the standard-size packages, it is located “on the back of the bag at the bottom.”

Exposure to Salmonella can cause an infection known as Salmonellosis, “the most common form of bacterial food poisoning in the U.S.,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. Typical symptoms—which most often resolve on their own within a few days—include stomach pains or cramps, diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Clinic experts go on to explain how Salmonella infection is activated. “When you get Salmonella, it means enough bacteria have gotten past your stomach acid and immune system to make you sick. Salmonella bacteria invade and destroy the cells that line your intestines. This makes it hard for your body to absorb water, which can give you stomach cramps. The water leaves your body in the form of diarrhea.”

They note that infants, seniors, people with compromised immune systems and those living with sickle cell disease are at the highest risk of severe symptoms and complications from Salmonella.

As a remedy, Wegmans says: “All product may be returned to the service desk for a full refund.”
