A Potential Choking Hazard Has Prompted a Nationwide Meat Recall, Says FDA
On October 27, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide recall of Deli Express BBQ Pulled Sandwiches, citing a “potential presence of foreign particles,” specifically plastic, that could result in a choking hazard if swallowed.
The pulled pork sandwiches were available to purchase between the dates of January 16 and October 23 this year “in the Continental U.S., Hawaii, and Guam” through convenience stores, grocery stores, and mass retail outlets, according to the FDA—and retailers have been told to “remove affected products from store shelves and inventory immediately.” An online store locator suggests the products may be sold at retailers such as Walmart, Walgreens, 7 Eleven, and more.
The FDA also provided product label images, which show the BBQ pulled pork sandwiches as weighing 5.5 ounces. Label instructions also indicate the product can be keep refrigerated or frozen, then microwaved before eating.
Consumers can check for a UPC of 0-41433-13087-2 and the following lot codes on the ingredient label next to the barcode on the individual product packages:

The E.A. Sween Company, the listed recalling firm by the FDA, states on their website that they’ve made food “for people on the go” since 1955. In addition to Deli Express, the company lists Simply Delicious Bakery, Market Sandwich, and San Luis among its brands.
Though no injuries or illnesses have been reported related to the recall, per the FDA, “any product from the affected lots should be considered potentially contaminated.” Anyone who has the recalled product on hand is urged to not eat it. Instead, the agency recommends returning it to the original store of purchase for a refund.
However, if you have consumed any of the recalled sandwiches, the FDA advises calling E.A. Sween at 1-800-328-8184 and selecting option 2 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central Standard Time Monday through Friday.
