It’s often walnuts and almonds that receive accolades from health experts—but if you’re a pecan fan, they too have their advantages. New Mexico State University‘s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences praises pecans for their nutrients like vitamin B6, calcium, and folic acid. Pecans may also be a sound choice for people with diabetes, as pecans “are a very low glycemic index food.” (Just note the sweets they go in usually call for moderation!)

Indeed, if you’re a fan of pecans in your baking, oatmeal, or elsewhere, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has informed the public that 32,670 pounds of pecans have been recalled, including pecan halves, pieces, and more.

The report notes Arkansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Texas as part of the distribution pattern for the pecans, though it’s not clear whether they were shipped to other states from these points. The FDA adds that Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates also received the product, which may have shipped from the port of Houston, from where the Texas-based operator, Navarro Pecan Holdings, LLC, is “strategically located” three hours. Their website indicates the company is “one of the largest pecan shellers in the world.”

Navarro says their pecans are “generally packaged and shipped” in 30-pound containers. The company also notes it “is proud to have won the approval of many national and international food manufacturers. Our pecans are found in a variety of brand-name food products in the ice cream, confectionery, cereal, snack food and bakery industries.”

The pecans “have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella,” according to the report, which led to the recall. The Cleveland Clinic states Salmonella is “one of the most common forms of food poisoning,” as it’s noted more than one million Americans are infected with it each year.

Though first initiated on July 10, the recall was just officially classified last week by the FDA. By assigning the recall a Class I designation, the agency has deemed the situation to be one “in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
