Officials say there's a risk of "serious or life-threatening" health consequences for a specific group of regional shoppers.
A Popular Brand’s Nuts Were Just Recalled in 5 States, Announces the FDA
Often packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, nuts can be a nutritional win when you’re in the mood for a snack. Some of the top doctor-recommended diets, including the Mediterranean and DASH diets, prominently feature nuts as well. But even a trace of the wrong kind of nut can have serious implications for some people, which is why consumers in the Northeast, specifically five states—Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island—should know about a new recall announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
On October 28, the agency alerted the public to a potentially hazardous mix-up that could affect those with a specific food allergy. Two types of mixed nuts reportedly produced by the popular brand Hampton Farms are named: Mixed Nuts Roasted Unsalted and Mixed Nuts Roasted and Salted, both packaged in 8-ounce tubs. Hampton Farms is “the leading roaster of in-shell peanuts in the United States,” according to its company website.
The affected nuts are packaged in clear plastic tubs and bear the following details:
Mixed Nuts Roasted Unsalted, 8 ounces (oz.)
- Lot Code: 23025
- UPC: 8 10111 02237 8
- Best If Used By: 8/18/2026 23025
Mixed Nuts Roasted and Salted, 8 ounces (oz.)
- Lot Code: 23825
- UPC: 8 10111 02236
- Best If Used By: 8/26/2026 23025
The FDA reports that, while reviewing routine paperwork on September 15, it was discovered that the mixed nuts’ labels failed to list hazelnuts in the allergen warning, despite being included on the ingredients list. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the agency states.
The products were sold between September 2, 2025 and September 9, 2025 in in the above five states. The FDA states the recalled products were specifically sold at Stop & Shop stores. A store locator page shows Hampton Farms products may also be distributed to a wide range of retailers, including Walmart, Dollar Tree, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Publix, and Safeway, though only Stop & Shop is named in the FDA’s notice.
Hazelnut allergies are among the most common tree nut allergies in the U.S. among both children and adults. According to the food safety organization Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), 12 types of tree nuts, including hazelnuts, are required by the FDA to be labeled in plain and specific language to avoid accidental exposure.
As of publication, there have been no reports of illness connected to the recall. However, “consumers who have purchased these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, or they may discard the product,” the FDA writes.
