Products sold at Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and now another popular grocery chain are all listed as part of an outbreak with four deaths reported.
More Pasta Recalled by a Fourth Major Retailer, Affecting 15 More States
The list of products affected by an ongoing Listeria outbreak investigation continues to grow. Last week, products sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s were named as being linked to a Listeria monocytogenes contamination event that has so far resulted in 19 hospitalizations and four deaths across 15 states, according to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Two new updates this week now show that the incident is far from contained as additional products are pulled from shelves and distributors across the country.
On September 30, one update announced that additional pasta products—this time bowtie pasta used in deli salads sold at the grocery chain Albertsons and other Albertsons-owned stores—have been added to the recall list due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. These items were reportedly sold at Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico’s Community Markets, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Market Street, Randalls, Safeway, Tom Thumb, and Vons. The 15 states included are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
On October 2, the latest update warned that Demers Food Group had voluntarily recalled select Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini for also including the potentially-affected pasta. The prepackaged pasta dish was distributed nationally to wholesale distributors and operators between September 15 and September 25 .
Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, California, was named in the Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Albertsons product notices pertaining to the outbreak. A September 29 press statement from the company indicates it is now working closely with the CDC, FDA, and state health officials to investigate the source of the outbreak.

The FDA notes that Listeria infection can cause severe or life-threatening infection in children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems. They add: “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The agency also provided cleaning recommendations in its latest reports, instructing “anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.”
