It’s unclear how far-reaching the ripple may be, though it's sizable—and the distributor supplies to customers across the country.
More Than 11,000 Pounds of a Kitchen Spice Recalled for Presence of Foreign Material
It’s one of those ingredients that brings the flavor to so many dishes—though, as a heads-up, dietitians say onion is a food capable of irritating your gut. If that doesn’t stop you, this might make you pause: one U.S. governmental agency has informed consumers that one form of an onion product could contain an unwanted addition.
In a report released Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration publicly announced a recall of 11,100 pounds of what appears to be a dry onion spice. The agency states the recall is taking place due to “Foreign object (metal) in granulated onion ingredient.”
The named recalling company, PAX Spices & Labs Inc of Covina, CA, describes itself as “a Southern California-based importer, manufacturer’s rep, and wholesale distributor for exotic and aromatic spices, herbs, oleoresins, essential oils, natural colors, and more.”
A list of products on the PAX Spices & Labs’ website includes granulated onion, saying it’s available in pack sizes of 50-pound bulk bags, 5-pound bottles, or 1-pound bottles. The company also says private labeling is available. The FDA reports the recalled product “is distributed to 10 customers who further process ingredient into a final product,” further suggesting the company likely supplies to food producers.
Further details the FDA provides are:
- Product is distributed in bulk brown paper bags
- Lot #: 7I08242057
- MFG Lot #: IO820WOG2057
The recall, which is marked as “ongoing,” was first initiated on August 1. But on August 12, the FDA officially designated it as a Class II. This means the agency has determined the recall situation is one where “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
