Licensing for brand names like Welch's, Disney, and more, here's why a major distributor of "sweet condiments" had to pull mass quantities of product.
A 40-State Recall on Nearly 25,000 Cases of Peanut Butter and Jelly Just Received a Critical Update
A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the epitome of wholesomeness, for both its nutrients and enduring familiarity. Especially if you know which products to shop for, this classic stands to fulfill basic nutrition needs, like protein, healthy fats, some fruit-powered vitamins, and fiber from whole-grain bread.
That said, an FDA report issued on Friday resurfaces a months-old recall first executed last spring by Los Angeles-based Ventura Foods LLC. The event impacted what appear to be 23,435 cases of mostly single-serving cups and pouches of creamy peanut butter, grape jelly, and strawberry jam due to reported “Foreign material. During production, the firm found pieces of blue plastic in a filter.”
According to Ventura Foods’ website and the FDA notice, the recall appears to include major brand names sold into foodservice and retail settings that may include supermarket delis, hotels, restaurants, and other accounts. Single-serve peanut butter and jelly brands featured on Ventura Foods’ site are Disney, Welch’s, Flavor Fresh, and more.
The recall was first initiated in April 2025 and this week received Class II designation from the FDA. This means government experts have now determined the issue to be “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The recall impacted Sysco, U.S. Foods, Dyma Brands Inc., and possible other distributors’ accounts in 40 U.S. states. Only the following states appear not to have received the recalled product: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
