More Than 110,000 Cases of Ice Cream Recalled in 23 States
It’s one of the sweetest sounds of summer: that familiar jingle of a nearby ice cream truck. Whether your usual order is a scooter crunch or frozen pop, it’s a quintessential way to cool down…and slow down.
However, a new alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could put a damper on some spontaneous ice cream fun this weekend.
On Friday, the agency announced an ongoing recall for “total of 110,292 cases to include all products” of various ice cream products from Rich Ice Cream Co based in West Palm Beach, Florida.
According to the Rich’s Ice Cream company website, their ice cream products are available via schools and “on street vending trucks (a.k.a. ‘the ice cream man’) all across the country.”
The potential threat of Listeria monocytogenes contamination has caused several food recalls in recent weeks—and that appears to be the cause here as well. The report says “Potential Listeria Monocytogenes Contamination” is the recall reason.
Eating foods contaminated with this type of bacteria could result in a disease known as Listeriosis, according to health experts—with cases ranging from less severe to “the more severe form, invasive listeriosis, which occurs when the Listeria spreads beyond the intestines.”
The products were distributed to the following 23 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Nassau, Bahamas is also listed.

The recall, which was reportedly first initiated on June 27, was not classified by the FDA until Thursday, July 17. The agency now categorizes the event as a Class II, meaning officials determined the products involved may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.
