They appear to be sold at several major retailers—and are now part of an effort to identify products related to a Salmonella outbreak.

5 Salsa Brands Were Just Named in a Recall Affecting 11 States and Washington, D.C.

When naming key salsa ingredients, there are a few that immediately come to mind: tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and jalapenos for that all-important heat. But a new recall for several salsas indicates another type of produce is also included…and it’s one that’s been in the headlines recently for a foodborne illness outbreak.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public about a recall for 17 types of products—including salsas—for possible Salmonella contamination, as part of a growing outbreak connected to cucumbers. The recalling company is listed as The Coastal Companies, which appears to be located in Laurel, MD.
Eleven states—plus Washington, D.C.—are affected by this particular batch of recalled products. The following states were listed: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. (In the FDA’s report, the state of Virginia is listed twice.)
Though there have been no reported illnesses in connection with The Coastal Companies’ products, the overall current outbreak has resulted in a total of 26 illnesses in 15 states so far, per the FDA. The FDA and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released information last week about the outbreak connected to cucumbers produced by Bednar Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc.
For this recall, the distributors are listed as East Coast Fresh in Laurel, MD, and Hearn Kirkwood in Jessup, MD. The products were distributed between May 6 and May 21, according to the report.

All lot codes are affected for all the listed products, according to the FDA.
From a brief online search, some of the brands appear to be sold at retailers such as Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Weis Markets, Giant Food, and more. Just last week, Walmart announced a recall of cucumbers sold at their stores.
Consumers are encouraged to “record the number of cases” if they have the affected products on hand, then destroy the products. If you’re not sure if a product has cucumbers, the FDA advises to not eat or use them.
Additionally, “Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers should not eat, sell, or serve the recalled products containing those cucumbers,” says the report.
Other products named in the recall include salads and breakfast bowls. Additional details on these products can be found at the above recall link.
