It's a carrier of those healthy fats—but possibly also harmful contamination for customers of one recognizable retailer.
Popular Frozen Fish Recalled in 7 States
Grabbing that bag of frozen fish from the freezer aisle is satisfying reassurance that even when conditions make it tough to stock up on groceries, you’ll have a healthy protein available after just a few hours of thaw time.
But among customers of BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in seven U.S. states, salmon fans are getting an important warning. In a notice dated Wednesday, February 11, North Carolina-based regional outlet Watauga Democrat published details about recalled Atlantic salmon “due to the potential for the product to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.”
The recall reportedly affects the Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. Wellsley Farms-branded Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold in two-pound bags. The recall is said to affect just one lot, numbered 3896, with corresponding UPC code 888670025963.
States Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., on their site: “The recalled product was sold only in BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia from January 31 through February 7, 2026.” They report the “presence” of listeria was discovered through random sampling by the FDA.
Unlike many other food poisoning-causing bacteria, listeria can proliferate even in very cold temperatures. While the notice states no illnesses had been reported as of February 11, listeria infection can result in “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.” Further, “Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. If you have symptoms of Listeria infection, consult a health care provider.”
Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., is connected with Massachusetts-based Gorton’s seafood products, the consumer brand selling products such as fish sticks, breaded fillets, and more. The two also share similarities in their logos, which both feature a fisherman out at sea. “Slade Gorton offers over 800 fresh and frozen seafood products sourced from over 25 countries around the world,” says the company’s site.
The news source who reported the recall mentions the following possible remedy:
“BJ’s Wholesale Club is directly notifying its members who may have purchased the recalled product. If you think you may have purchased the recalled product, call 1-888-628-0730 at any time for instructions on how to obtain a full refund and what to do with the remaining product.”
