A Popular Soup Has Been Recalled in One Major State After Discovery of an Undeclared Ingredient
Packed with plant-based protein, fiber, and an impressive array of micronutrients, lentils are one of the simplest foods you can add to your routine for better health. Starring in grain bowls, salads, and more, these versatile legumes are capable of keeping you both full and fueled. However, for some consumers looking forward to a particular type of soup featuring this ingredient, it’s time to check the fridge in light of a new recall notice.
Bakkavor USA—noted as a “leading provider of fresh prepared food” on its website—has announced a recall of its 16-ounce Meal Simple Red Lentil Dal Soup because the product “contains undeclared milk.” The product was distributed between November 3, 2025 and December 8, 2025, and sold exclusively at H-E-B stores in Texas. H-E-B also posted a similar statement on December 10.
This creates a potentially serious health risk for individuals who are allergic or highly sensitive to milk, as consuming the soup could trigger a severe or even life-threatening reaction, the FDA’s safety alert says. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of milk allergy can include “wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems,” as well as anaphylaxis or difficulty breathing.
The affected soup comes packaged in a clear plastic cup, and the Best By date of 1/11/2026 is printed on the bottom of the container. The front label states that the soup is “made with red lentils, tomatoes, onions, ginger, serrano peppers, cilantro and mint.”
The issue came to light when a consumer alerted the company that the contents of a container labeled as Red Lentil Dal Soup did not match the description. Instead, the cup contained a poultry and rice soup. An internal review revealed that the product mistakenly packaged was Meal Simple Turkey & Wild Rice Soup, which includes milk as one of its ingredients. In contrast, the Red Lentil Dal variety does not contain milk and does not list milk anywhere on its label.
At this time, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported. However, Bakkavor USA continues to investigate the root cause of the mix-up.
Customers who purchased the affected product are encouraged to return it to the store where it was bought to receive a full refund. Anyone seeking additional information or clarification can contact H-E-B Customer Service at 1-855-432-4438, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Standard Time.
