High-Risk Recall on the Favorite “Tom Cruise Cake” Gets an Important Update
It’s like the Giordano’s Chicago pizza, Momofoku steamed buns, or Russ & Daughter’s famous New York bagels you can order to have shipped anywhere in the country for a special celebration, thanks to the geographical genius that online markets like Goldbelly offer nationwide for regionally adored foods.
But this week came a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealing that a highly buzzed-about bakery has finally closed out a recall that was previously rated as a Class I event—the FDA’s highest warning level.
Doan’s Desserts in Los Angeles is known for their “Tom Cruise cake,” named for the Hollywood icon who’s said to buy this cake for his friends at the holidays—or, as Spanish-American singer Victoria Canal has said, some call it this because it’s “so rich.”

Stars like Mindy Kaling, Jimmy Kimmel, and Glen Powell have also publicly declared their love for this cake, which is actually called the White Chocolate Coconut Bundt cake. Rich indeed, boasting cream cheese, sour cream, and butter among the ingredients, and said to be “beloved by Hollywood’s elite.”
But, the FDA’s Friday, February 27 report reveals that wheat, one of the major food allergens, was left off the ingredients list on 4,050 of the ready-to-eat, frozen “Tom Cruise cakes” that had been shipped to New York and California retail locations “with nationwide distribution.” The report states that was also true for the same quantity of Doan’s ready-to-eat Carrot Bundt Cakes.
The recall was first announced last October, then assigned later that month as a Class I risk, meaning FDA experts determined it was “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Friday’s report reveals the recall is now “terminated,” meaning the recalling firm’s obligations have been met to contact accounts and distributors, pull product from point of sale, and complete documentation. In other words, if you’re inspired to order this star-studded confection for your upcoming Oscars party, you’re probably in the clear.
