Hot summer days call for cold ice cream treats. While you could head to a nearby ice cream shop for a scoop, why not enjoy the decadence at home? With so many options and brands now available at stores, indulging your sweet teeth has never been easier.

But if you usually reach for one particularly well-known brand’s products in the freezer aisle, you’ll want to know about a new alert, happening only weeks after more than 50,000 gallons of ice cream were involved in a separate recall.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of 6,668 cases of Breyers Ice Cream. According to the report, Rocky Road ice cream was packaged in a Chocolate Truffle ice cream tub with a Rocky Road lid.

The reason for the recall is listed as “undeclared allergens and mislabeled product.” The FDA report indicates that the text “may contain tree nuts” was printed on the Chocolate Truffle tub, but the Rocky Road lid it was paired with said “it did contain almonds.”

It’s estimated that up to 1% of Americans have a tree nut allergy, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Additionally, 30% of “peanut-allergic individuals are also allergic to tree nuts.” Tree nuts include almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, cashews, and Brazil nuts.

A tree nut allergy is considered one of the “Big 9” food allergens in the U.S. and, given the potentially serious adverse health effects it could cause, must be declared on food product packaging.

The affected ice cream products were reportedly shipped to both distribution centers and retailers nationwide.

Though over 6,600 cases have been recalled, the FDA report indicates that “roughly 12 individual units” are thought to be affected. The agency does not state how many ice cream tubs each case contained.

The FDA includes these details in its report:

  • Rocky Road Ice Cream packaged in a Breyers Chocolate Truffle Tub with a Breyers Rocky Road Ice Cream
  • Size: 1.5-quart tub
  • Lot code: JUL1026GB3
  • UPC: 077567457288
  • Product quantity: 6,668 cases
  • Recalling firm: Unilever Manufacturing (US), Inc. in Sikeston, Missouri

It appears that Unilever Manufacturing, a century-old consumer goods company that’s also behind ice cream brands Ben & Jerry’s, Klondike, and Magnum, initiated the recall on June 2. The FDA, however, reported it to the public on June 10.

The FDA has now classified the event as a Class II recall, meaning there’s a potential for the product to cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.

The agency’s report does not state at which retailers the recalled products have been sold. However, a brief online search suggests that Breyers products are available at Walmart, Target, ShopRite, and Wegmans, among other grocery stores and retailers.
