Nuts are a veritable superfood, as studies indicate that snacking on them could yield benefits such as improving heart health or lowering the risk of diabetes. But for those with certain food allergies, they can also pose a serious threat if proper precautions are not taken. In the case of a continuing recall from one big-name nut brand, now updated to include a risk classification and other key details, there’s an important reminder to always check labels carefully.

On October 29, we first reported on a nut recall affecting a then-undisclosed quantity of two types of mixed nuts produced by Hampton Farms—“the leading roaster of in-shell peanuts in the United States,” according to its company website—due to containing “undeclared tree nut,” a potential allergen.

Though the original recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggested that the items were sold at the grocery retail chain Stop & Shop in five states—Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island—an October 30 update now appears to indicate that more than 6,000 tubs of affected nuts were shipped to just two states: Massachusetts and New York.

Specifically, the mixed nuts contained hazelnuts, one of the most common tree nut allergens. While the item was included in the ingredients list, it was not featured on the allergy warning, health authorities say.

Nuts bearing the following information were distributed to stores in plastic tubs:

The recalling firm is listed in the October 30 update as Severn Peanut Company LLC, based in Severn, NC. The Hampton Farms’ website indicates that the company is headquartered in the same city, and that the company’s former president originally founded the Severn Peanut Company with his dad.

As part of its “ongoing” recall, the FDA has also now classified the incident as Class II, suggesting that the risk of “serious adverse health consequences is remote.” This is the middle tier in the FDA’s system used to communicate health risks to the public.

However, the FDA warns that harm is still possible: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the agency reported in the previous advisory.
