Helping parents create safe spaces in the home, baby gates can keep your little one contained while allowing for some independence—in baby steps, of course. But a new recall issued early Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission (CPSC), which implicates Amazon, Walmart, and other online retailers, serves as a reminder that even products we trust can have problems requiring immediate attention.

In a proactive move to ensure child safety, the agency says Mom Genius, an Alpharetta, Georgia-based company, has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 920 of its Retractable Safety Gates, though a separate recall page on the Mom Genius website lists the total number as “about 950.” According to the October 9 CPSC notice, these gates do not comply with mandatory standards for expansion gates and expandable enclosures.

The primary issue comes from the possibility of a child’s torso fitting “through the opening between the gate and the floor,” creating a risk of entrapment that could lead to serious injury or even death, CPSC authorities warn. While no injuries have been reported to date, the potential hazard has prompted this urgent recall.

The retractable metal and mesh gates involved were reportedly sold online through Amazon.com, Walmart.com, PurchasingPower.com, and Perpay.com between March 2024 and June 2025. The items were manufactured in China and retailed for $50 to $75 each.

Provided product details include:

  • Product Name: Mom Genius Retractable Safety Gate
  • Model Number: SH.20.006B02
  • Colors: Black and gray
  • Size: Approximately 33 inches tall; extends up to 118 inches
  • Label Location: Side of the gate, marked “Retractable Safety Gate”

The FSIS offers the following instructions for those in possession of the affected products: “Consumers should stop using the recalled retractable safety gates immediately and contact Mom Genius for a full refund. Consumers must destroy the gate by cutting through the mesh and take a photo showing the destroyed gate. Submit the photo to product-recall [at] momgenius.com. Once the photo is received, Mom Genius will issue a full refund.”

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, roughly five children under the age of 7 are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms every day due to baby gate-related injuries. In addition to looking out for product recalls, the hospital recommends following their checklist of safety precautions.
