Cottage cheese makes a reliable appearance on the grocery lists of high-protein dieters, along with the general public who trust this classic dairy pick. Whether paired with peaches or pineapple for a balanced breakfast, or blended into desserts, pancake mixes, and even homemade bagels, searches for recipes that incorporate cottage cheese have surged in the past few years.

That’s one reason today’s Walmart recall is so notable for residents in 24 states. Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a recall announcement indicating that three varieties of Great Value small curd cottage cheese had been recalled from Walmart locations in nearly half the country’s states. These varieties were 0% milkfat, 2% milkfat, and 4% milkfat.

The reason for the recall, according the report is due to “liquid dairy ingredients used in the items not being fully pasteurized according to state regulatory standards.” The report continues: “While no illnesses or hospitalizations associated with the recalled products have been reported to date, consuming products that are not fully pasteurized can pose a significant health risk, especially to the young and elderly or immunocompromised individuals.”

Referring to Montreal-based Saputo Cheese, the manufacturer of the cottage cheese that then licenses to Walmart, the report reveals that “The issue was discovered during pasteurizer troubleshooting exercises conducted by SUSA in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture.”

The FDA report recommends that customers discard of the product or return it for a refund.
