Just two days after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public to a cheese recall affecting Boar’s Head brand pecorino romano cheese—and right in the midst of one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year—Walmart and Sam’s Club just jointly announced on Wednesday afternoon that cheese has been recalled from both Walmart and Sam’s Club store locations, all linked to an ongoing food safety issue stemming from one cheese distributor and concerns around possible Listeria contamination.

In the joint notice, an unspecified cheese from The Ambriola Company has been recalled after being sold at select Sam’s Club stores in 27 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Walmart also noted that select products were sold in select Walmart stores in 13 states—Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia—and Washington D.C.

In an FDA report also issued Wednesday on behalf of The Ambriola Company, pecorino cheese branded under the label Member’s Mark is mentioned. Member’s Mark is the private brand label for Sam’s Club, the membership-based wholesale warehouse club division of Walmart.

The Ambriola Company has issued a recall for several other brands of its grated pecorino romano cheese for potential Listeria contamination after routine testing earlier this week, including Boar’s Head, Member’s Mark, Ambriola, and Pinna brands.

“We take food safety very seriously and immediately alerted stores and distributors to remove the affected products from shelves,” said Phil Marfuggi, Ambriola Company chief executive officer, via the FDA recall notice. “We are working closely with the FDA and continuing to test our products and facilities to fully understand the situation.”

Late Wednesday, Target also reported to its customers that Boar’s Head grated pecorino cheese romano, sold in 6-ounce cups, was being recalled from its stores.

Also on Wednesday, a separate recall was issued regarding more pecorino romano cheese—this time sold at Wegmans Food Markets in nine states.

According to the FDA report, Wegmans is recalling Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese with Wegmans’ scale labels due to the “potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes.” Wegmans initiated the recall after being notified by its supplier that the cheese was potentially contaminated. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The cheese was packaged in a plastic tub and sold in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C. Wegmans posted a notice on its website noting that the affected cheese can be identified as follows:

Locatelli Pecorino Romano Cheese – Grated

  • UPC: 2-77580-XXXXX-7
  • Any product sold from 11/14/25 to 11/24/25

Wegmans is urging customers who have purchased the cheese to return it to the store for a full refund.
