Conversation about water quality grows more disheartening as an increasing number of government protection measures are rolled back. In a video shared by Senator Cory Booker this week, Dr. Amy B. Killen, MD, noted that right now, more than 30 environmental protections are being rolled back, with higher levels of mercury, arsenic, and lead levels in our waterways now being permitted as just one example.

Even if you do practice vigilance by purchasing bottled water, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an epic recall of bottled water from a Wisconsin plant.

Valley Springs Artesian Gold, LLC, processes and bottles the product in its Portage, WI facility. They’re the recalling firm on 651,148 units of bottled water reportedly distributed in Illinois and Wisconsin, though it’s unclear whether they were shipped beyond those states. The FDA cites the following as the prompt for the recall: Water was bottled under insanitary conditions.

The FDA notice suggests all production codes for these products are included in the recall.

Valley Springs 100% Natural Bottled Water — 1 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-00701 9

Valley Springs 100% Natural Bottled Water — 2.5 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-01501 4

Valley Springs Infant Water — 1 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-01401 7

Daisy’s Doggy Water — 1 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-90100 3

Valley Springs 100% Natural Bottled Water with Fluoride — 1 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-01301 0

Valley Springs Steamed Distilled Water — 1 Gallon

UPC: 0 31193-00601 2

The FDA is calling this a Class II recall, by their standards “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Via Delish, the FDA has been quoted commenting that the water could be “contaminated with filth, or whereby it may have been rendered injurious to health.” It’s unclear specifically what those conditions were.

What we do know is that Valley Springs is a small regional bottler, so their distribution footprint is likely limited to regional grocery chains and independent retailers in the Wisconsin and Illinois areas rather than national chains.

The Daisy’s Doggy Water product has a separate distributor listed in the recall: DDW LLC out of Sun Prairie, WI. This suggests at least some of the products moved through a distribution middleman, potentially into pet stores or farm supply retailers in addition to grocery stores.
