Grilled, chilled, or in a summer seafood boil, shrimp is a versatile summertime favorite. Healthline calls it one of the “foods that are almost pure protein,” with a 3.5-ounce serving providing 20 grams of protein, around 100 calories, plus possible antioxidant properties that may calm inflammation and help fight illnesses like cancer.

But if you’re a Whole Foods deli shopper, there’s new word of caution. Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of 64,000 pounds (3,200 cases) of frozen, tail-on white shrimp, reportedly distributed “exclusively [at] Whole Foods USA.” It’s reported that Whole Foods sold “some of the product” via retail in-store delis at various locations across the country. Additionally, “The remaining portion of the lot is passed through to a downstream customer in Canada (Seven Seas Fish Co. LTD).”

Though the recall appears to have been enacted on May 6, and thus is likely no longer active, this week the FDA has classified this a Class I event. FDA Class I recalls are defined as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The reason for the recall is described as “Frozen Raw Peeled & Deveined tail on, shrimp contains undeclared sulfites.” The Cleveland Clinic highlights cases in which sulfites can trigger reaction, possibly as serious as anaphylaxis.
