Buying a weighted blanket

You’ve probably heard the hype surrounding weighted blankets. And it’s real. In 2017, one of the first weighted blankets for the general public, Gravity Blanket, received a total of $4 million on its Kickstarter campaign.

Their popularity comes down to the promise of improving sleep, reducing anxiety, and stress.

Typically, weighted blankets will contain glass, steel, or plastic beads or poly pellets as fillers to give them the added weight to gently “hug” you, according to Rocabi, a weighted blanket company. The material of the blankets can range from cotton to fleece. The cover can consist of materials including synthetic fibers or natural fibers, like wool.

But, weighted blankets can be—as the name suggests—heavy. You should choose the right size blanket depending on your own weight. Occupational therapy guidelines recommend choosing a blanket that is 10 percent of an individual’s body weight, explains Danielle Lake, MS, an occupational therapist in Havertown, Pennsylvania.

The size of the blanket also matters. “The blanket should fit evenly on top of the mattress so that no weights are hanging over the edge of the bed,” Lake says. “The blanket should never cover the individual’s head, and parents should always provide supervision when using a weighted blanket with their child.” (You’ll want to know how to wash a weighted blanket too.)
