Turmeric, the bright yellow spice used so often in curries and Middle Eastern cooking, is good for more than just brightening up a dish. Turmeric has two different components that contribute to the good work it does for health.

The first is called volatile oil, which is a good thing despite the frightening name. The second, and perhaps more powerful, is curcumin, which is what gives turmeric that vivid orangey yellow color. Turmeric is enticing to look at, but its health benefits make it even more exciting. Here’s just a sampling of complaints and disorders that turmeric can help to alleviate.

1. Inflammation. Inflammation is the source of a lot of the aches and pains we face on a regular basis, and it’s also thought to be the cause of a lot of diseases afflicting Westerners. Beating back inflammation sets you up to have less pain joints that function better. Studies have shown curcumin to be as effective in reducing inflammation as hydrocortisone as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatories (think ibuprofen), and there are no negative side effects with turmeric, unlike with drugs.
