The Dukan Diet has grown in popularity thanks to the celebrities like Kate Middleton, her sister, Pippa, Jennifer Lopez, and Penelope Cruz. The diet, created by Dr. Pierre Dukan, a French medical doctor, is hugely popular in France and because of the recent press and success of British and American celebrities, the diet has truly gained worldwide popularity. But what is it?
The Dukan Diet focuses primarily on long-term weight-loss and success. To do this, the diet gives users a realistic goal weight that they can achieve and maintain for the course of their lifetime. The goal weight is achieved by using a four-phase process; Attack Phase, Cruise Phase, Consolidation Phase, Stabilization Phase. Each phase can take a few days, months, or even years.
During the first phase, Attack, dieters must eat only lean protein, drink six glasses of water per day, walk 20 minutes, and eat at least 1 and 1/2 tablespoon of oat bran. The Attack phase lasts for one week then dieters move on to the Cruise Phase, which follows the same process but allows dieters to add in low-starch vegetables. During the third phase, Consolidation, dieters can add-in one serving of fresh fruit and two slices of whole-grain bread per day. In the final phase, Stabilization, dieters can eat whatever they’d like; but must return to eating only protein one day per week.
Although it’s likely that you’ll lose weight on the Dukan Diet because of calorie restriction, many nutritionists and healthcare professionals worry that the diet is too restrictive and does not provide the necessary nutrients to fuel the body. In addition, because of the diet’s strict guidelines, it may be difficult to stick with the diet for long-term success.
Though it sounds enticing to start a popular celebrity diet, you should consider whether this type of diet fits in with your lifestyle. If you’re the only one in the family on the diet, it may be hard to have the support you need.
It’s important to speak with your doctor before beginning any diet so that they can help you decide what may be best for you and your weight-loss goals.
