More than 93,000 Pounds of Meat Recalled in 3 States

Updated: Mar. 01, 2024

Eastern and Midwest customers cited “a chemical taste” after beef was unknowingly treated with an ingredient below food-grade standards.

If you tasted anything odd in your most recent restaurant meal, you might not be alone. A significant quantity of meat sold for use in restaurants in three states is being recalled. MF Meats, located in Falconer, N.Y., is recalling 93,277 pounds of meat in coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) after customers noticed some cuts had a “chemical taste.” The recall, announced on February 29, 2024, includes several choice cuts of steak, pork, and veal, ground beef and pork, and a variety of sausages.

After receiving the complaints, the company conducted an investigation, which revealed that a non-food-grade oil could have been used to process some of their products. The oil in question was not approved for meat processing use, said the FSIS. The company notes that the oil, a “non-food-grade mineral seal oil,” was potentially used on the surface used to process the meat, and not inside the products themselves.

All meat in question was produced from November 26, 2023, through Feb. 16, 2024, and has “EST. 569” stamped inside the USDA mark of inspection. It was distributed to restaurants throughout New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The packages are labeled with Julian dates, which indicate the day of the year by a single number 1-365. The products involved in the recall have the dates 330-365 (November 26 – December 31, 2023), and 1-47 (January 1 – February 16, 2024).

Despite several restaurant customers reporting an odd taste, there have been no adverse reactions reported from anyone who has eaten the recalled products. Restaurants that received the meat are to return the product or throw it away. If you suspect you have eaten any of the recalled products and experience any issues, be sure to notify your restaurant, contact a healthcare provider, and alert the company and FSIS. Questions about the recall are directed to Doug Neckers, the president of MF Meats, at 716-483-4050 or they can email [email protected].
