If you’re spending time at home, there’s no need to wear shoes, right? Actually, walking around barefoot for too long isn’t always great for your feet—and not just because of things like stubbed toes. A good alternative? Slippers.
“Adding cushion and a barrier between your feet and the hard floor can be very beneficial, since it can relieve the stress on your feet,” says Velimir Petkov, DPM, board-certified podiatrist at Premier Podiatry in Clifton, New Jersey. “Being on your feet all day does not have to cause any additional discomfort. If your slippers have deep memory foams, for example, your feet can be able to absorb so much more pressure than if you just walked barefoot around your home.”
Certain pre-existing conditions can make going barefoot dangerous, too. In particular, people with diabetes can develop peripheral neuropathy, which can cause a loss of feeling in the feet. Combined with poor circulation and wound healing, even a minor foot injury can lead to serious problems. “Slippers are highly recommended for people that have reduced protective sensation on the bottom of their feet, such as diabetics,” says Dr. Petkov. “Preventing the formation of foot ulcers is of paramount importance in those patients so wearing comfortable slippers is not only recommended but required.” When you’re not in your slippers, make sure you’re sporting the best footwear for neuropathy.
Slippers may just be a preferred choice for some because of their comfort. But it’s important to purchase a pair that makes sense for you. “The older population should wear anti-skid slippers and anyone suffering from conditions such as plantar fasciitis should have arch support in their slippers,” says Dawn Figlo, DPM, member of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, founder of The Organic Foot and podiatric surgeon in New York City. “I would highly recommend choosing slippers with arch support, too.” (Here are some common foot problems and podiatrists’ solutions.)

Choose from tan, navy, or mahogany in these slippers. “They have an anti-slip rubber and suede sole so you won’t have to worry about slick floors,” says Dr. Figlo. “They’re warm, too, which is perfect for early mornings and late nights.” This masculine style slipper makes them perfect for family vacations, visiting friends, and work travel, when all of that resumes.

Your feet will feel spoiled in these slippers. “They are great because they have deep memory foam insoles, which provide extra cushion and comfort,” says Dr. Petkov. “The added benefit is reduced foot stress, especially after a long day of walking outside your home.” (Check out the best walking shoes for your feet.) Protect your feet in these wool slippers that are designed to be durable and long-lasting. “I like the adjustable designs and roomy toe box in these,” Dr. Petkov. “They’re ideal for diabetic patients and patients that may have deformed feet due to severe arthritis. And the memory foam is especially useful in the prevention of foot ulcer and callus formations.” Your feet will feel protected and supported. (Follow these healthy feet tips for diabetics.)

Not only are these slippers built to keep you from skidding, but they’re also waterproof, in case it’s misting and you want to walk out front to grab the newspaper on your lawn. “This pair has a supportive arch and memory foam, which provides a lot of comfort underfoot,” says Dr. Figlo. “This also helps to aid individuals that have arch and heel pain, too.”
$25-$32

Known for making some of the warmest and comfiest boots, Ugg brings that same combo in these slippers. “I have a pair of these myself,” says Dr. Petkov. “I like that they have water-resistant suede uppers, as well as rubber outsoles. They allow you to wear them outside especially in cold and damp weather—perfect for a quick dog walk or grabbing your mail. But the best thing about them is the insoles—they are entirely made of natural wool which provides extra comfort and a soothing effect while wearing them.”
$29.99
If you’re a Crocs fan, why not try a pair lined with fur to help keep your feet cozy? “There is plenty of toe room in the wide toe box, which can accommodate bunions and hammertoes,” says Figlo. “It provides warmth and can double as a shoe for short excursions.”
$79
Another good option for those who like to keep their feet warm, these slippers have sheepskin and shearling. “They will both insulate your feet during the cold months as well as absorb moisture during the warmer months,” says Dr. Petkov. “The outsoles are made of premium sheepskin, so they’re durable and provide stability. The contoured memory footbed and arch support give an even better fit through the heel.”
