Ashley Tisdale has come a long way since her days as a child starThe now-38-year-old is still an actress, but also so much more: A producer, singer, mom and entrepreneur. When she’s not on set, she’s creating and promoting new products for her cross-category wellness brand, Being Frenshe, which takes a holistic approach to health and is “rooted in the emotional power of scent.”

To Tisdale, sleep is an essential part of this holistic wellness, offering an opportunity to recharge for the next day. To help people achieve their own excellent sleep and relaxation, Ashley Tisdale has recently partnered with Natrol, a supplement brand which offers melatonin gummies. This week, Ashley Tisdale spoke with The Healthy @Reader’s Digest about this partnership, as well as about her own sleep rituals, the power of scent to evoke relaxation and what holistic health means to her.

Ashley Tisdale on her sleep routine

The Healthy: To start off, Ashley, we’d love to hear a little bit about your current sleep routine.

Ashley Tisdale: I am someone who really believes in rituals and setting myself up for good sleep. I have a product line called Being Frenshe that’s being sold at Target and one of the mood-boosting scents is Lavender Cloud, which is part of the Unwind and Rest Collection. If I can, I do a nice little bath before sleep. I definitely always take a shower or a bath, I like that feeling. And then I love to spray the Hair, Body, and Linen Mist on my pillow.

I’ve also been using the Natrol gummies, which is a melatonin gummy. I love them because they really help me get to sleep, but they also really help me stay asleep, which is great. I am someone who thinks that sleep is so important for being present the next day. I can tend to, if I have a sleepless night, feel pretty anxious or out-of-it or not so present, especially being a mom and running my businesses.

Ashley Tisdale on the power of scent

The Healthy: In the PR release you said “scent-focused rituals are essential to [your] wellbeing.” What is it about scent that really connects that feeling of relaxation for you?

Ashley Tisdale: I think that scent can really bring you back to a moment. It’s pretty amazing the science behind it! And I think that using the Lavender Cloud scent automatically makes me feel relaxed. I use the body wash in the shower, and it has this feeling of “Ahh!” Once you have a good night of sleep with it, you’re continually connected to, “Oh, this will start to get me back into that zone.” A candle that I was using years ago can take me back to that moment. It’s one of those things I’ve always talked about; when I have a rough night of sleep, opening a window and lighting a candle can change the energy of the room and change your energy. And so, scent has always been really important in my life.

Ashley Tisdale on holistic health

The Healthy: So what does holistic health mean to you, and how does sleep factor into it?

Ashley Tisdale: Obviously, wellness has always been a huge part of my life because of my mental health, and I have found that using certain ingredients can really help. Clean ingredients are so beneficial for our health and wellness. I’m all about balance and that’s what [Being] Frenshe is about as well—it’s not one way or the other. There are definitely things that I love that are not the most clean ingredients but I really truly think—meeting with the experts that I have met with—it’s really all about moderation and balance. I also look at things like how we talk to ourselves and treat ourselves. There are times that we can be toxic to ourselves and so it really starts from within. It starts with how we speak to ourselves, our thoughts, and then trickles into the products that we use. For me, wellness is a journey; it’s not a destination. And so it’s always going to be like a rollercoaster sometimes.
